YouTube Thumbnail Size Guide
YouTube's official thumbnail specification is 1280x720 pixels
with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The minimum width is 640 pixels,
and the maximum file size is 2MB. Uploading an image that
does not match these dimensions causes YouTube to auto-crop or compress it,
resulting in blurry text, cut-off faces, or black bars.
- Resolution: 1280x720 pixels (recommended), 1920x1080 (high-res)
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 (mandatory for full display)
- Max file size: 2MB (JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP)
- Min width: 640 pixels
Fill vs Fit - Which Resize Mode to Use?
Fill mode crops your image to completely cover the target
dimensions. This is ideal when your image is already close to 16:9 and you
want edge-to-edge coverage with no empty space. You can drag to reposition
which part of the image stays visible.
Fit mode scales your image to fit inside the target frame
while preserving the full composition. Empty space is filled with a beautiful
blurred version of your image - so nothing gets cropped and there are no ugly
black bars.
How to Fix the YouTube "File Too Large" Error
If YouTube rejects your thumbnail with a "file too large" error, your image
exceeds the 2MB limit. Our resizer shows the estimated file
size in real-time. If it exceeds 2MB, lower the quality slider or switch to
JPG format (which produces smaller files than PNG). For
maximum compression, use WebP format - it reduces file size
by 25-35% compared to JPG at similar quality.
